What do Argentine tegus eat?
Omnivorous diet consisting of gut-loaded feeder insects, whole prey (rodents, chicks), raw lean ground turkey with bone meal, fish, and dark leafy greens or fruits. Young tegus eat predominantly protein, while adults require 20-30% high-quality plant matter.
Food per year: $400–$900

90–95°F
Cool side

- Night
- 68–74°F
- Humidity
- 70–80%
Heat a basking area big enough for the whole body using several bulbs, measured with an infrared thermometer. Turn all heat and light off at night. Keep humidity up with deep, damp substrate and a humid hide.
Argentine tegu enclosure size
96 × 48 × 48 in (8 × 4 × 4 ft) for an adult. Custom PVC enclosure or sealed wooden vivarium, horizontal layout.
Hatchlings can start in a 4x2x2 ft enclosure, but tegus grow fast and need their full 8x4x4 ft adult enclosure within about a year.
House individually; tegus are solitary animals that will fight and cause severe injury if cohabitated.
Lighting & heat
UVB: T5 HO 10-12% linear tube (e.g. ReptiSun 10.0 or Arcadia 12%) over the basking area, covering about half the enclosure length
Heat: Cluster of 3-4 halogen flood bulbs (about 100W each) over the basking spot, on a thermostat
Day length: 12–14 hours of light
Substrate
Good choices: organic topsoil mixed with play sand and peat moss; cypress mulch; coconut coir mix.
Avoid: cedar shavings; pine shavings; calcium sand; gravel; cat litter; astroturf.

Are Argentine tegus good pets?
Only for an experienced keeper.
Argentine tegus live 15–20 years, need about 20–45 minutes of care a day and cost $575–$1,300 a year in supplies. They tolerate brief, calm handling.

- Before you buy
- Argentine tegus are invasive in parts of the Southeast. Florida, Alabama and South Carolina ban new ownership, and Georgia bans importing and breeding them; in Florida, South Carolina and Georgia only animals already owned and permitted or registered by each state's deadline may be kept. Check your state wildlife agency before buying.
Before your Argentine tegu comes home
- 01
2-3 weeks before
Assemble enclosure and add substrate layers
Constructing the massive 8x4x4 foot vivarium and adding deep burrowing substrate takes significant time and effort.
- 02
1 week before
Test heating, lighting, and humidity parameters
Running thermal equipment while empty allows you to tune dimming thermostats and confirm accurate ambient and basking temperatures.
- 03
48 hours before
Verify temperature gradients and lock down environmental stability
Checking conditions with an infrared thermometer ensures safe surface heat and proper humidity before the tegu arrives.
- 04
Day one
Place tegu into the enclosure and provide water
Immediate access to a large soaking basin and dark hides helps the tegu settle after transit stress.
- 05
First 1-2 weeks
Maintain hands-off observation and offer food via tongs
Avoiding handling during initial acclimation prevents excessive stress and reduces the risk of defensive behavior.
- 06
First 30 days
Schedule a initial exotics veterinary wellness exam and fecal check
Establishing care early ensures proper parasite screening and verifies overall body condition.
Common setup mistakes
- Underestimating enclosure size and attempting to house an adult in standard aquariums.
- Using a single small heat lamp instead of a wide multi-bulb basking area that warms the whole body.
- Failing to provide a deep substrate layer (8-12+ inches) for burrowing and humidity retention.
- Skipping linear T5 UVB lighting under the assumption that heat lamps alone are sufficient.
- Feeding an all-meat diet without calcium supplementation or appropriate plant matter.
Questions people ask
What size enclosure does an adult Argentine tegu need?
An adult Argentine tegu requires an enclosure measuring at least 8x4x4 feet (96x48x48 inches). Larger males benefit from enclosures measuring 10x5x4 feet or entire dedicated reptile rooms.
What temperatures do Argentine tegus need?
Aim for a basking surface of 125-135°F under a wide cluster of halogen bulbs, a warm side of 90-95°F and a cool side of 75-85°F. At night turn the heat off and let it drop to about 68-74°F.
How much does a tegu setup cost?
Expect to spend about $1,240 to $3,500 on the essentials, most of it on the 8x4x4 ft enclosure, plus multi-bulb heating, linear UVB, a thermostat, deep substrate and large hides.
